NGO (Non-governmental organisation)
The Irish Underwater Council (CFT) is the national governing body for recreational underwater sports in Ireland. It was founded in 1963 to organise and promote sport scuba diving and snorkelling and has grown since then to incorporate over 80 clubs around the Country. CFT is ISO accredited, highlighting our professionalism, instruction skills and individual development. If you are interested in learning to Scuba Dive or Snorkel our doors are always open to the complete beginner as well as the more experienced Diver. Our objectives are to allow you to develop the skills required to excel at this amazing activity within a friendly, safe, professional and continually developing environment.
The Northern Ireland Marine Task Force (NIMTF) is a coalition of ten environmental organisations, working together to achieve healthy, productive seas now and in the future. Our members include:
Ulster Wildlife, RSPB, WWF, Northern Ireland Environment Link, National Trust, Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, Friends of the Earth, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and Marine Conservation Society.
We represent the combined support of around 100,000 local people in Northern Ireland who want to see our marine environment better protected. We have been actively campaigning for better protection for our seas since 2004. In particular we want Northern Ireland to have effective and well implemented marine policy and legislation.
The NIMTF is part of a UK-wide campaign. We receive financial support from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. Together with our sister organisations, the Wildlife and Countryside Link, Scottish Environment Link, Wales Environment Link we have been campaigning across the UK for effective marine legislation for all UK seas. Each is a coalition of environmental organisations, united by their common interest in the conservation and enjoyment of wildlife, the countryside and the marine environment.
Our campaigning focusses on four key asks for NI seas:
Completing a well-managed ecologically coherent network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs);
Implementing an ecosystems-based Marine Plan which prioritises our natural environment;
Developing fully formed fisheries legislation to ensure a sustainable and productive fishing industry for Northern Ireland.
We are a membership-driven NI charity. A Council elected by our membership governs us. Work is carried out by a dedicated staff team, supported by a large number of committed volunteers.
We strive to base all our work for wildlife on sound knowledge and science. Involving people of all ages and in all communities in our nature conservation work is also very important. Our preference is to work in partnership with others, such as local communities, companies, local and regional government and organisations of many kinds.
