As we look back at all the achivements of 1999 we know we have a lot more work to do in 2020, to realise the goals of the Irish Ocean Literacy Network.
The IOLNetwork is in good shape, we have a solid steering group who are very passionate about the growth of the network, we have over 100 members signed up to the network and our social media presence is growing too. So we have the foundation, a platform and messaging.
Look before you leap
2020 looks to offer a number of key moments for the IOLNetwork to enable the network to communicate its goals to the public, while the IOLN hasnt confirmed its actions for 2020 we know that the Ocean Decade, EU Maritime Day and SEAFEST will probably feature member participation and a similar call to action like the #WeAreIslanders campaign 1999.
The Steering Group and secretariat are planning to meet in January, where we can discuss what events are coming up and how will the members participate.
It is so important that the members have input into the activities of the network , while the steering group can influence the actions, members can also influence them too. All members of the IOLN know the goal of the network, which is;
The vision of the Network is to achieve an Ocean Literate society across the island of Ireland. An Ocean Literate society is described as being one in which citizens understand the ocean’s influence on us and vice versa.
“An ocean literate citizen…. understands the importance of the ocean to humankind…can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way and….is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources.” – H2020 SeaChange project
The mission of the Network is to create, maintain and develop an informal network of ocean literacy champions to facilitate collaboration, sharing and coordination of marine outreach and ocean literacy projects across the island of Ireland.
We all work together to reach the same goal.
Our Needs, Ocean Literacy Champions
To enable the network to grow and reach its goals, we need;
- Members to talk to everyone about the network, encourage people to join, its free!
- Members to offer feedback, ideas on possible actions for 2020, email firstname.lastname@example.org
- Follow us on social media and share our stories
- Try to attend or participate in IOLN campaigns
As we finsh 2019 and look forward to the year, what will the network do in 2020? Work hard, Invite, Motivate, Inspire and Network, the ocean is worth it!
