May 2021 is fast approaching and it’s going to be busy, with lots of marine events happening online across Ireland and Europe.
But how can you get involved? The Irish Ocean Literacy Network is proud to be part of a number of these events, and we want to share IOLN members projects and work, to broaden our ocean community.

European Maritime Day (EMD) – Stakeholder Workshop via zoom
On the 20th of May, the IOLN will host a workshop on ‘Ocean Literacy through visualization and storytelling: local, regional and international examples’. The workshop will include a panel discussion, breakout rooms, musical pieces, and a short slideshow of local Irish ocean literacy projects.

- Ms Easkey Britton, world-renowned surfer, marine social scientist and writer and member of the IOLN

EMD in my Country Event, Ocean Literacy Communication, on the 19th of May from 7.30-8.30 via zoom
Sea Search Ireland and Galway Atlantaquaria will host an event on Ocean Literacy Communication. Methods for engaging audiences with the ocean literacy principles, techniques for face-to-face and online delivery, and different styles and methodologies for a range of audience types will be examined through presentation and practical tasks. T

First Ocean Literacy Festival – Celebrating the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea
Supported by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, the EU4Ocean Atlantic & North Sea basin community is organising the first Ocean Literacy Festival, which will showcase initiatives and activities from all European countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea.
The Festival will take place on May 22nd, 2021, back-to-back with the annual European Maritime Day conference, organised this year in Den Helder (Netherlands).
The IOLN hope to showcase Irish Ocean Literacy Projects involving members on the day. Content will be made available throughout the day on IOLN social media pages, and content will be uploaded to IOLN website. Schools and the Public Groups will be encouraged to action for the ocean including local clean ups, displaying art and a new song about the sea called ‘Ocean Love’ will be shared.
The closing date for submissions is the 25th of April and you can register your event here as an individual or as a member of the IOLN.
